I'm going to go check out a 1992 Pathfinder this weekend (5 speed, 4x4, new clutch and tires, 265k, 60k on rebuilt motor). Looks very clean for its age, but he's asking $2800. Any thoughts? What would a fair price be? I'd love to get into overlanding eventually, but this is more for winter use, hauling dogs, camping, and light trail work to start.

Anyone have experience with these? What to look out for when I go drive and inspect it?

Bruh, $2800 for any vehicle with 265k is CP

I'm pretty sure old Pathfinders never die.

If they start to rust, they do.

For sure. Will give it a very thorough inspection, but the seller says it has very little.

I recall a discussion on Car Talk where the rear struts were bad on one of these, perhaps subject to a recall. In any event, I'd get the thing in the air and have a good long look underneath with a mechanic. If it's been beaten to shit you don't want to be paying for ball joints, struts, tie rod ends ....

Thanks for note. I agree about the PPI with a mechanic, even on a "cheap" purchase like this.

It's over 20 yrs old. Make sure the engine is cold when you get there, start it up and take a test drive. If nothing feels terminally wrong, offer $2k and see if they'll take it.

Good advice about making sure it's a cold start.

Considering spending a bit more for something like this:

VERY good advice - see what color smoke it blows on cold startup.

Seems too expensive, I'd pay $1,000 for it.

Thanks for the input. I think it's priced for the condition, new consumables and fairly recent engine rebuild, but it's still probably too high for the age and total miles on chassis.

Yup, it's still not a new truck though. There probably is some rust, body damage and other problems that are still lurking. Maybe offer $1,500?

Planning to go drive it and give it a good look tomorrow (along with a more mechanically-minded friend). It's a want, not a need, so I'm not in any rush, and if the price is high, no one should swoop in and nab it from me.

Glad to hear you haven't reached the point of no return, Haha.

I'd keep it low, to leave budget for repairs.

tough call, I think it could be worth $2600 if its as nice and works as well as it appears, but offer lower and work your way up

You're the first one who thinks it's worth anything close to what they're asking, but I'm with you, if it's running well and in good shape overall, I don't have a problem paying a couple grand for it.
